  6. GENERAL INFORMATION
  7. ====================

  9.    The Graphics Blaster RIVA TNT BIOS Upgrade utilities consist of the
  10.    following files:
  11.  
  12.         * GT2045GC.EXE       - BIOS upgrade program
  13.         * README .TXT        - this readme file
  14.         * PATCH\PT2045GC.EXE - Patch BIOS upgrade program

  18. KNOWN ISSUES
  19. =============
  20.  
  21.  I.  Running a Direct3D game on some ASUS motherboards causes the system to hang. 
  22.  
  23.        On the ASUS P2L97 rev. 1.05 and P2L97-DS rev. 1.03 motherboards, the AGP 
  24.        sidebanding bus protocol that allows a graphics card to access system 
  25.        memory in a Direct3D game or application is broken.  We provide a patch 
  26.        that disables the sideband protocol and allows Direct3D applications to 
  27.        run normally, with some performance degradation depending on the 
  28.        application.

  30.        Please use the BIOS located in the \PATCH directory.
  31.  
  32. II.  The Graphics Blaster RIVA TNT hangs at the video bios screen.
  33.  
  34.        When the Graphics Blaster RIVA TNT is used on certain systems, it is 
  35.        possible that the Graphics Blaster RIVA TNT will hang at the video bios 
  36.        screen upon boot.  If you are experiencing a symptom similar to this, you
  37.        will need to install a temporary video card to run the patch bios update.  
  38.        To run the patch in this situation, do the following:
  39.  
  40.        1.  Move the Graphics Blaster RIVA TNT to the lowest priority (highest number)
  41.            pci slot.
  42.  
  43.        2.  Install a temporary video card into the highest priority (lowest number)
  44.            pci slot.
  45.  
  46.        3.  Boot to NATIVE DOS.  (see below)
  47.  
  48.        4.  Run the GT2045GC.EXE patch bios update. (see below)
  49.  
  50.        5.  Once the patch update is completed, shut down the system and remove the 
  51.            temporary video card.  Then, move the Graphics Blaster Riva TNT to the 
  52.            original PCI slot and reboot.  The GB RIVA TNT should be updated and 
  53.            functioning properly.

  56. STEPS TO UPGRADE BIOS
  57. ======================
  58.  
  59.      1.  Determine if your video BIOS has the latest update by looking at the
  60.          version number displayed during system bootup.
  61.          If your version is newer, you do not need to upgrade your BIOS.
  62.          Otherwise, proceed with the following steps.
  63.  
  64.      2.  Boot to native DOS, and run the BIOS upgrade program GT2045GC.EXE.
  65.  
  66.          Note: Due to the nature of Windows environment, this program has to be 
  67.          run in native DOS mode.  If you do not know how to boot up your system 
  68.          in native DOS mode, refer to the section below on "BOOT TO NATIVE DOS 
  69.          MODE".

  71.      3.  Press <F> to flash the new BIOS into your Graphics Blaster RIVA TNT.
  72.  
  73.          Note: The programming process takes about 10 seconds (including
  74.          verification time) to complete.
  75.  
  76.          WARNING: Do NOT interrupt this process.  Interrupting this process
  77.          may result in unexpected (and undesirable) consequences.
  78.  
  79.          When the program displays the message, "BIOS successfully flashed", 
  80.          this means that the VGA BIOS on your Graphics Blaster RIVA TNT is 
  81.          upgraded.   
  82.      
  83.      4.  After the new BIOS is successfully flashed, reboot your system.
  84.          The system should now boot up with the updated Graphics Blaster
  85.          RIVA TNT BIOS (verified by the new version number displayed
  86.          during bootup).

  89. =========================
  90. BOOT TO NATIVE DOS MODE
  91. =========================
  92.  
  93.     The following are two methods of booting your system to native DOS mode:
  94.  
  95.     Method 1 - Using a bootable diskette
  96.  
  97.     1.  Insert an unused diskette into your floppy disk drive A.
  98.     2.  At the command prompt, type "FORMAT A: /S" to create a bootable diskette.
  99.     3.  Leave the diskette in the drive and reboot your system.
  100.         This boots your system to native DOS mode.
  101.  
  102.     Method 2 - Using the <F8> key
  103.  
  104.     1.  Reboot your system, paying attention to the on-screen initialisation
  105.         messages.
  106.     2.  When you see the text "Starting Windows 95...", press the <F8> key 
  107.         within 5 seconds.
  108.         A menu appears.
  109.     3.  On the menu, select the option "Command prompt only" to reboot the 
  110.         system to native DOS mode.
